Research
The fishery
management process depends on sound advice based on reliable, robust and
up-to-date science.
Data collection
requires both scientific training and knowledge of fishing operations,
a combination difficult to foster.
I have been
involved in the design, planning, research and implementation of applied
research programmes with commercial, subsistance and recreational fisheries,
as well as direct contracts with industry and stakeholders organizations.
I'm particularly
interested in the use of fishers and processing factory based personnel
to collect scientific data, as this is a direct, participatory and very
cost effective method for information gathering. Besides being the vital
aspects of today's fisheries co-management initiatives.
My favourite role in
these projects is direct sample collection and the training of samplers.
